Summer is a great time for students to catch up on their studies or move ahead to the next grade level. This summer, LDAYR is partnering with Evoke Learning to offer a math transition program for students entering Grades 7, 8 and 9. The program will begin with a review of grade-appropriate concepts to help students identify learning gaps from the previous academic year. Students will identify and learn to understand their deficit areas and will work to move through the specific units in math that they find difficult until they have a stronger understanding of those concepts.
Once the student is able to demonstrate a clear understanding of the previous year’s material, the program begins to focus on the backbone of the following year’s curriculum. Students learn ahead into the next academic level. Each week, students will learn about a new topic that will help them increase their success in next year’s math class. Students are explicitly taught a variety of different problem-solving strategies, with each strategy tailored to the learning strengths of the individual student.
Each student will learn specific strategies adapted to their strengths and weaknesses and will receive a list of resources that will assist them in the upcoming school year. Students with learning disabilities, ADHD, and executive function challenges will also be taught skills and strategies for organization and planning. Together, the student and teacher will co-create a math strategies handbook that meets the student’s needs. The advancement element of the program gives each student the confidence to move into the next academic year.
This program is appropriate for all learners. Lessons will be taught through hands-on experiences using technology (i.e. iPads), manipulatives, and small group activities. To help students review concepts that coincide with next year’s curriculum, online lessons will be available for access from home. At the end of the program, students will have a hard-copy book and an online version of step by-step strategies for how to solve problems within each math strand.
The student-teacher ratio will not exceed 4-1 for this program.
